Trust Will Get Us Through
Thought of the Week
Trust will get us through.
Petey and Matilda live next door. I can look out our kitchen window and observe most of their lives. I’ve watched them spruce up their home, raise several little ones, and live seemingly carefree lives. I’m not sure they even know I exist, but their lives have inspired me.
These two little lovebirds (oh, did I forget to mention that Petey and Matilda are sparrows?) moved into their birdhouse last year and have been a constant reminder of God’s faithfulness.
Every morning, Petey is out on the roof of his house, preening and singing. He doesn’t seem worried about what the day will bring; he’s just in the moment. Then I see Matilda pop her head out of the tiny opening to their home, and they are officially ready to fly off in search of breakfast.
Each season brings something new for our little feathered friends. I’ve watched them feed their little ones for days on end. They’ve taken shelter in their home during torrential downpours and thunderstorms. They’ve even had to fight off intruders trying to steal their home. But the one thing I’ve seen each morning is Petey outside, preening himself (getting ready for the day) and chirping his little songs (speaking life into the new morning).
No matter what comes their way, these birds start each day with a fresh perspective. They don’t worry too much about what happened yesterday or what’s going to happen tomorrow. Instead, they seem content with what’s right in front of them.
What if we took a note from Petey and Matilda?
It’s as if my little neighbors know exactly how our God works. All we need to do is stop worrying and start trusting.
Sometimes I wonder what the days ahead will bring. I find myself starting to worry and trying to make the perfect plan for my life. My fears and anxieties start to creep in, so I walk to my window and observe Petey and Matilda for a moment. These little pieces of God’s glorious creation help us realize that worry won’t solve anything, but only trust will get us through.
Know Him
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?”
— Matthew 6:25-27 (ESV)
